Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance
Group Personal Excess Liability (GPEL) insurance, also called umbrella coverage, provides coverage for damages that you or members of your household may be legally responsible for. It gives you liability protection over and above the limits of your individual auto, home, renters, etc. insurance policies.
Eligibility and Enrollment
Regular U.S. full-time employees are eligible for the Group Personal Excess Liability (GPEL) insurance program. You may enroll and purchase coverage during the fall Annual Enrollment period for a coverage effective date of January 1.
How it Works
Coverage under GPEL insurance is in excess of any other collectible insurance, such as home or auto insurance. For example, in the case of a car accident, your primary auto insurance policy would provide the first level of coverage and, if that amount is exhausted before covering everything you owe, your GPEL insurance will be available.
If you enroll, the plan automatically covers you, your spouse/domestic partner and all eligible children. Premiums are collected through an external payment site on an annual basis. The plan is administered by Gallagher Risk Management Services, Inc. and insured by the Chubb Insurance Company.
Coverage limits
You can elect coverage amounts of either $2 million, $5 million or $10 million. Additionally, this policy includes $1,000,000 of Excess Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Protection. This coverage is not offered in most umbrella policies. This coverage applies if the other driver is negligent and is either uninsured or maintains inadequate liability limits.
Underlying insurance
The GPEL plan requires that you have the following primary insurance and pays only after certain limits are exceeded:
- Personal Liability (homeowners’ insurance)
- Registered Vehicles (including motorcycles and motor homes)
- Uninsured/Underinsured motorists’ Protection
- Coverage for any Watercraft
